Green roofs

Green Roofs - Irrigation Solutions for Green Roofs

Green roofs pose a special challenge for irrigation due to their exposed location and the sometimes low substrate heights.

Extensive green roofs often do without irrigation and use drought-tolerant plants for greening. However, even these relatively undemanding plants suffer from extreme drought during the hot months.

Intensive green roofs with house garden-like planting are far more demanding and should always be prevented from completely drying out the substrate volume.

With MP rotators in our particularly short pop-up sprinkler housings with 5 cm risers, drip pipes laid over a wide area or micro-sprayers, optimum conditions for healthy plant growth can be created even with the lowest substrate build-up height.

A real lightweight among green roofs: Roll & Go green roofs in no time at all! The products of the Roll & Go series can be installed despite the low load-bearing capacity of the roof. For this, the roof may have a maximum angle of inclination of 10°. The construction layers of this lightweight green roof system are also particularly easy to install roll out and ready.

  • Sedummix mat 30 mm: Pre-greened Sedummix mat consisting of a mix of 8-12 different sedum varieties. Degree of coverage on delivery: at least 95%.
  • Storage fleece 5 mm: The storage fleece has excellent water absorption and thus ensures a constant water supply for the plants.
  • Drainage type PP: Drainage type PP is a lightweight, three-dimensional drainage mat made of polypropylene.
  • Protective fleece: made of recycled fibers to protect the roofing from damage.

Green roof and irrigation with drip pipe

Green roofs are becoming increasingly popular as a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for urban development. Not only do they provide a natural habitat for plants and animals, but they also help reduce the heat island effect in cities and improve air quality. An important aspect of green roofs is their irrigation system, which can have a significant impact on the health and sustainability of the plants growing on them.

One plant species commonly used in green roof systems is sedum. Sedum is a succulent species that is well suited for green roofs because it is drought resistant and requires little maintenance. Sedum also has the ability to absorb and filter rainwater, which can help reduce runoff and retain pollutants from the water or air.

There are several options for green roof irrigation, including manual irrigation, automatic systems, and drip irrigation. Drip irrigation is often preferred for green roofs because it is more efficient and can help reduce water waste. Drip irrigation systems deliver water directly to the roots of plants in the substrate, minimizing evaporation and runoff.

When drip-irrigating green roofs, it is important to choose the right type of drip line. For sedums and other shallow-rooted plants, an underground drip tube is usually best. This type of drip tubing releases water slowly and evenly, which prevents overwatering and ensures plants get the water they need to thrive.

In addition to choosing the right type of drip line, it is also important to properly design and install the irrigation system. Drip lines should be evenly spaced and installed in parallel rows, with each row connected to the main line or head-end. The system should also be designed for easy access and maintenance, and it should have proper drainage to prevent water from accumulating on the roof.

Green Roofs and Irrigation Conclusion.

Overall, green roofs are a great way to improve the sustainability and health of the urban environment. By using drought-resistant plants like sedum and employing efficient drip irrigation systems, we can help conserve water and reduce the impact of urban development on the natural Environment.
