Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

With the Plug&Rain® Tap Connector, you can easily connect your garden irrigation to your existing water supply. The advantage: thanks to the two-way distribution, you can connect your irrigation system while still having the option for manual water withdrawal with a watering can, hose, or bucket. Using a flexible stainless steel pipe, the water is aesthetically guided from the distributor down to the ground. Here, the transition to the PE pipe selected during planning (25mm or ¾", or 32mm or 1", depending on the available water volume and length of the pipeline) is made via a high-quality clamp connector that is permanently pressure-resistant up to 16bar. If you are using drinking water, take a look at our separation stations for drinking water protection.

The safety of drinking water has top priority. If you use drinking water for your garden irrigation, a separation station is not only sensible but also mandatory. It protects against backflow and contamination, so you don't have to worry about water quality. This ensures that your irrigation system not only operates efficiently but also meets the highest safety standards. For underground irrigation systems, a Category 5 separation station is installed; it has a free outlet and prevents water from the garden from being pushed back into the mains supply. It also prevents a biofilm from growing back into the drinking water network from stagnant areas.

When using drinking water for garden irrigation, a drinking water separation station, also called a system separator, is required according to DIN EN 1717 if the DIN 1717 requirements are not already met in another way. This prevents water and impurities from flowing back from the irrigation circuit into the drinking water system. According to DIN 1717, a check valve is not sufficient.

A drinking water separation station should be used wherever drinking water needs to be protected from contamination and germs. The unpressurized storage tank is equipped with a safety overflow in accordance with DIN EN 1717 and serves for demand-oriented drinking water replenishment to protect the drinking water installation against contamination, backflow, and mixing with contaminated water using a safety device. The installed multistage centrifugal pump ensures sufficient water pressure. The associated pressure control regulates the pump based on flow volume and pressure. In the event of a pressure loss (opening of consumers), the pump automatically switches on. As soon as the maximum pressure is restored (consumers closed) and there is no more flow, the pump switches off again. Additionally, the pressure control includes dry-run protection, which switches off the pump if it runs dry, thus protecting it from damage. A proportional valve with a float ensures that the correct amount of drinking water always flows into the storage tank.

Installations on the drinking water network may only be carried out by qualified professionals. Please contact your plumber for the installation of the separation station.

The drinking water separation station itself has a noise level of approximately 58dB, about as loud as a normal conversation at room volume. However, it is possible to install the system separator with sound insulation. To prevent noise from being transmitted through the pipes, the separation station can be mounted with flexible hoses.

Typically, system separators are installed indoors because they contain sensitive electrical components. If you wish to install your separation station outdoors, please check the manufacturer's specifications to see if the product is suitable for outdoor use.

The choice of water pump depends on the size of your garden and the type of water source you want to use—whether it's a well, cistern, or another water reservoir. You can read the delivered water volume of the selected pump from its performance diagram. Automatic lawn irrigation requires an operating pressure of 3.5bar, which corresponds to a delivery head of 35meters, plus the actual delivery height. We often design irrigation systems with 1.8m³/h at 3.5bar using ¾" pipes. The distance from the water supply to the last sprinkler should not exceed 70m. Feel free to learn more about the pumps here.

When purchasing a water pump, various factors should be considered. First, the intended use is crucial: do you need the pump for irrigating your garden or for supplying water to your house? Different pump types are available depending on the application area. Important criteria include the flow rate and delivery head, as well as the type of water to be pumped. Careful selection ensures that the pump is optimally suited to your needs and operates efficiently. The pump should match your project's performance requirements and should neither be over- nor under-dimensioned. We recommend a pressure tank to avoid pressure surges and to prevent the pump from switching on and off too frequently.

If you want to irrigate with rainwater from a cistern, you'll need a special cistern pump. These pumps are designed to pump water from cisterns. Cistern pumps, like the Plug&Rain® Cistern Pump, are ideal because they operate quietly and require little space. Variants with floating intakes ensure that the clean water just below the surface is drawn. It's best to install the cistern pump with a filter unit in the supply line. Using a filter prevents nozzles and drip tubes from clogging, thus extending the lifespan of your system. With the right pump, you can efficiently use rainwater and irrigate your garden environmentally friendly.

A good cistern pump is characterized by sufficient pumping capacity and energy efficiency to ensure the required water pressure and save operating costs. It should be made from robust, corrosion-resistant materials to extend its lifespan. User-friendly installation and maintenance-friendly features are also important, as is automatic control that provides additional convenience and protection. Additionally, a low noise level is advantageous. Finally, the pump should be reliable and tailored to the specific requirements regarding delivery head and application.

Cistern pumps enable the efficient use of rainwater, contributing to the conservation of drinking water. This can significantly reduce water costs since less drinking water needs to be sourced. Using rainwater also reduces runoff and the load on the sewage system, positively impacting the environment. Modern cistern pumps are often energy-efficient, helping to reduce energy consumption. They are generally easy to install without complex systems, yet robust and durable, minimizing maintenance costs.

To prevent the cistern from running dry, we recommend installing a drinking water replenishment set. The electric drinking water replenishment feeds in drinking water as needed when the cistern level falls below the minimum water level. Refilling occurs according to drinking water protection regulations per DIN EN 1717 via a free outlet. In case of water shortage or low water level, a float switch automatically activates the 220V solenoid valve, refilling the cistern as needed. The drinking water is supplied via a free outlet in accordance with DIN EN 13076 Type AA. The float should be set so that an entire irrigation can be carried out with the water volume in the cistern.

These tanks prevent water hammer damage in the system and ensure that the pump cycles less frequently. This not only extends the pump's lifespan but also protects the pipes from abrupt pressure spikes.

If a steady inflow of groundwater is guaranteed even during dry summers, well water is a cost-effective solution for garden irrigation. Use a Plug&Rain® Well Pump along with a filter unit. A filter prevents nozzles and drip tubes from clogging, extending your system's durability.

A good well pump features several essential characteristics. It should provide efficient pumping performance to ensure the required water volume per hour. The operating pressure must be sufficient to deliver water to the desired height. High-quality materials like stainless steel or durable plastic ensure a long lifespan and corrosion resistance. Energy efficiency is also important, reducing operating costs and being more environmentally friendly.

Well pumps can be controlled either with a pump start relay or a Pressflow pressure switch.

Connected to the control system, these pump start relays enable automatic switching of the pump when water is drawn, ensuring smooth operation without manual intervention.

Pressflow pressure switches monitor system pressure and measure only the pressure drop. Once a certain value is undershot, the pump activates automatically to maintain stable water pressure.

Our well pumps make deep water supply possible. They are ideal for homeowners in rural areas without access to a local water network. The pumps can reach several hundred meters into the ground and are indispensable tools for water supply. We also offer pumps for industry and agriculture. Our products are immediately available and delivered within 1–4 working days, ensuring you always have enough water available, no matter how deep the source.

Convenient water withdrawal at any point in the garden is possible thanks to a water socket. This serves as an outlet and connection point for your constant-pressure line and is permanently installed underground by simply connecting it with a T-piece to the constant-pressure line between the water supply and valve distribution. Due to the built-in main valve, water flows only when the connection is established. The water socket is ideal for connecting garden hoses and other water systems, allowing you to use water flexibly and efficiently throughout the garden without long distances.

If you use a pump for your irrigation system, you should definitely keep it connected to the power supply. Many pumps automatically start the motor briefly every 24 or 48 hours to prevent the rotor from seizing. This is crucial to protect the pump from damage and ensure it functions properly again in spring.
