Modern irrigation techniques in fruit growing: efficiency and protection for your harvest

As a fruit grower, do you have a new plantation or stock that you would like to supply with irrigation?

The irrigation technicians at DVS Beregnung, with many years of expertise in the field of drip and frost protection irrigation, would like to give you a comprehensive insight into modern irrigation techniques in fruit growing.

We focus on two main aspects of orchard irrigation: Drip irrigation, optionally with fertigation and frost protection irrigation.

Drip irrigation: precision and efficiency in fruit growing

Drip irrigation has established itself as one of the most efficient methods in fruit growing. Here are the most important advantages:

  • Water-saving: Targeted delivery directly to the roots
  • Nutrient-efficient: Ideal for the use of fertigation (more on this later)
  • Adaptable: Can be used in different types of terrain
  • Labor-saving: Easy to install and simple to automate

Installation of a drip irrigation system:

  1. Feed at the front of the system with shut-off valve, filter and pressure regulation
  2. Distribution lines along the rows of trees with sufficiently dimensioned PE pipe
  3. Drip pipes with integrated or attached drippers, attached to the lower tension wire or fixed to the ground with ground hooks
  4. Ball valves for manually adjusting the amount of water per row
  5. Emptying the lower ends of the drip pipes after the season to prevent frost damage

How much drip tube is needed and how much water is required?

  • Drip tube material requirement: Total row length of the plant (average row length x number of rows)

  • Example calculation: For a plant spacing of 3.0 m x 2.5 m, approx. 100 m of head pipe and approx. 4,000 m of drip pipe are required

  • Water requirement: Number of drip points x water application (liters per hour / dripper). With 4,000 m of drip pipe with a drip distance of 33 cm and 2 liters per hour per dripper, this results in a water requirement of 24 m³ / ha / hour.

Fertigation: double benefit from water and nutrients

Fertigation combines irrigation and fertilization in one system. Advantages:

  • Precise nutrient supply
  • Reduced leaching
  • Labor saving
  • Improved nutrient uptake

For successful fertigation you need

  • A suitable drip irrigation system
  • Fertilizer injectors or metering pumps
  • Water-soluble fertilizers or liquid fertilizers

Frost protection irrigation: protection for your flowers

Frost protection sprinkling is a proven method of protecting fruit trees from late frosts:

  • Functional principle: Freezing water releases heat
  • Application period: Critical spring frosts during flowering
  • Challenges: High water requirement, precise timing required

Important aspects when planning a frost protection system:

  • Water availability (20,000-50,000 l/ha per hour)
  • Even water distribution
  • Automated control for timely start

Comparison and possible combinations

Modern fruit farms often combine drip irrigation with frost protection irrigation:

  • Drip irrigation with fertigation for daily water supply and fertilization
  • Frost protection irrigation as “insurance” against spring frosts

Economic aspects

Investments in modern irrigation systems pay off:

  • Yield increase through optimal water and nutrient supply
  • Improved fruit quality
  • Protection against frost damage secures the harvest
  • Labor savings through automation
