Irrigation of sports fields

Optimum irrigation of sports fields: Focus on efficiency and quality

As an experienced irrigation technician with over 10 years of expertise in the field of sports facilities, we would like to give you a detailed insight into modern irrigation solutions for sports fields. Efficient irrigation is crucial for the quality, safety and longevity of sports facilities - be it for soccer, tennis or other sports.

Why is professional irrigation so important?

  • Maintaining the quality of the playing surface and playability
  • Improving safety for athletes
  • Optimization of playing conditions
  • Extending the service life of sports facilities

Irrigation systems for soccer pitches: Quality through efficiency

There are two main approaches to watering soccer pitches:

Few sprinklers with large throw range -
traditional sprinkler arrangement (10+2 or 10+3)

How it works:

  • Use of powerful (golf) sprinklers with a large radius
  • Coverage of large areas with just a few units

Advantages:

  • Lower installation costs
  • Fewer sprinklers and pipes to maintain

Disadvantages:

  • Higher water and energy consumption
  • Risk of uneven water distribution

Many sprinklers with a smaller throw range (16 + 8)

How it works:

  • Use of several smaller sprinklers
  • More precise coverage of defined areas

Advantages:

  • More even water distribution
  • Better adaptation to the geometry of the space
  • More efficient use of water and energy

Disadvantages:

  • Higher initial installation costs
  • More components to maintain

The decisive factor: Distribution Uniformity (DU)

Distribution Uniformity (DU) is the key to resource-efficient irrigation. DU measures the uniformity of water distribution. A high DU leads to more efficient water and energy consumption. Systems with many smaller sprinklers achieve a higher DU, which leads to savings in the long term - because poorer distribution accuracy means that the overall system has to run longer and can lead to additional consumption of 50 - 100 m³ of water per year.

Resource efficiency over the service life

When choosing an irrigation system, you should consider the total cost of ownership over its lifetime. Systems with higher DU often require less pump run time, resulting in lower energy consumption. More even distribution reduces overwatering and water wastage.
Savings potential: Up to 30% less water consumption with optimized DU.

Higher initial investments in efficient systems pay off in the long term through lower resource consumption and improved space quality, which extends the service life of the system. The pressure loss also has an effect on the energy requirement for the cross-section of PE pipes. If you install larger pipes in the initial investment, this is initially somewhat more expensive and complex, but you will then have significantly lower pipe friction losses over the service life of the system and therefore lower energy costs.

Irrigation systems for tennis courts

Lawn tennis courts:

  • Need: consistent watering for optimum grass quality
  • Methods: Automatic sprinkler systems with precise water distribution
  • Benefits: Avoiding dry spots, promoting a dense turf

Clay tennis courts:

  • Necessity: Dust control and maintenance of playing surface quality
  • Methods: Surface irrigation with high-speed geared sprinklers for rapid wetting
  • Advantages: Improvement of playing characteristics, even moisture distribution

Planning and installation: the path to the perfect system

Professional planning takes into account

  • Ground type and condition
  • Specific requirements of the sport
  • Local climatic conditions
  • Integration of modern control systems and sensors

Sustainability and cost efficiency

Modern irrigation systems offer opportunities to use rainwater and reduce operating costs by increasing efficiency. This conserves valuable water resources and contributes to sustainability.
