Whether drip irrigation or pop-up sprinklers for the lawn - the water quality must be just right to ensure the proper functioning of the irrigation system for a long time. For all types of water - except for drinking water directly from the tap - a water filter should be used. When using rainwater from a cistern we additionally recommend the use of a floating extraction to avoid the pump from sucking dirt from the bottom of the cistern.
Depending on the type and size of filter, the filter for irrigation can be cleaned daily, weekly or monthly. The time and effort it takes to clean the filter varies according to the type of filter. Filters should be turned off and drained before flushing.
Suitable means for cleaning filters include: water hose, brush, hose with nozzle.
Types of filters: basket filter, disc filter - filter size depending on the water quality. Important aspects regarding the use, size and mesh of the filter:
- Use a filter to filter well water or rainwater before it is sent into the irrigation system by the pump.
- An appropriate filter should be selected depending on the flow rate, water volumes and contaminants.
- Filters remove sand, particles and other organic material from the water.
- There are two types of filters: basket filters and disc filters.
- The degreee of filtration is indicated in µm or mesh, for example 120 µm is a good value for nozzles, pop-up sprinklers and drip pipes.
- Basket filters are easier to clean than disc filters, but have a lower filtration capacity because the basket consists only of one layer.
- Filters should be cleaned regularly to ensure water can enter the irrigation system properly.
- Choose the filter size depending on the water quality. Usually one filter is enough, but two filters can be connected in parallel if there is a lot of sand from the well, for example.
- Filters should be placed as close as possible to the water supply, otherwise the pressure loss through the filter can impair the functioning of the irrigation system.
