Well pumps garden

Well pumps for your garden - irrigation with pump and groundwater

In addition to rainwater from the cistern and tap water from the tap, you can optimally supply the irrigation system in your garden via your own well. The groundwater does not have to be treated for irrigation, but can simply be fed into the irrigation system via a suitable well pump.

Submersible pumps in your well - water supply and sand filtration

Well pumps are great for supplying your irrigation system at a low cost. If the well is well drilled, has sufficient water flowing in, and the appropriate pump capacity is selected, little sand should be pumped through the well pump. However, a filter should be installed between the well pump and your irrigation system. Here we recommend disc filters - these have a high capacity and can retain even small sand particles. Sand from the well water and coarser dirt particles are thus caught in a central location and cannot be flushed into the irrigation lines.

Performance, water volume and pressure of well pumps

Before choosing the well pump should determine the subsequent total water consumption of the irrigation system for your garden. In addition, it is important to put the power of the well pump in relation to the selected type of irrigation. Thus, especially for types of irrigation with low irrigation consumption, appropriately sized well pumps should also be used. Alternatively, if a more powerful pump is used, a diaphragm pressure equalization vessel can be used to reduce the frequency with which the well pump is turned on and off. In a microirrigation system, the individual irrigation circuits should not be dimensioned too small to prevent premature wear of the pump due to permanent switching on and off.

What water volume (l/h) must a garden pump deliver for Irrigation?

In principle, pump manufacturers specify performance data such as "watts" or "kW", maximum flow rate and maximum pressure. In order to choose the right water pump for your garden irrigation, you need to take a closer look at the technical data of the individual models. Your irrigation system is usually rated at 3.5 bar, which corresponds to a head of 35m. The installation depth is added to this value. If the pump is placed at a depth of 10m, then the flow rate of the pump is read in the characteristic curve at 45m. We do not recommend selecting the pump according to the principle "as powerful as possible". Underpowered pumps switch off and on more often, which can significantly reduce the life expectancy of the well pump.

Which well pump is the right one - submersible or domestic waterworks?

A well pump, also called a submersible pump, is usually used as a deep well pump. If the groundwater level does not require very deep wells, a suction house waterworks can also provide sufficient pressure and volume for irrigation in your garden. The maximum possible suction depth of a domestic waterworks is about 8m. This is independent of the pump capacity of the house waterworks, since the existing air pressure must push the water into the suction tube. If the water has to be sucked from a well with a depth of more than 8m, a self-priming garden pump or house waterworks installed on the surface cannot be used. For well depths greater than 8m, a deep well pump must then always be used.

Pump control: pressure regulation or pump start relay?

A pressure switch starts the pump as soon as the pressure in the line drops below a desired level, e.g. when a solenoid valve opens. The pump is automatically started and ensures that new water is delivered to your irrigation system. A pump start relay is used in conjunction with the irrigation controller. The controller then starts the pump as soon as you want the irrigation to start.

What filters are recommended for the garden pump?

Even though some of the gear sprinklers have integrated filters, we consider a pre-filter to be indispensable in any case. These are necessary to remove sand or similar impurities from the system even before the solenoid valves. In the best case, the filter is installed in the pipe section between the water supply and the valve distribution. It is important to note that a disc filter should be installed. This prevents sand and coarse dirt particles from being washed into the irrigation pipes.

Diaphragm pump or dirty water pump - for small irrigation systems in your garden, individual solutions can also be found with solar. There is already a good selection of water pumps on the German market for this purpose. When choosing a pump, the ECO label as well as quality and durability should be in the foreground.

Another word on sustainability: even if the water is not lost, you should keep an eye on the water table when watering the garden. Modern controllers and climate sensors help you make adjustments for optimal and sustainable watering.
